SUMMARY:Capital Follows Punk: How Counter-Culture Shaped the New Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Speaker\nPaul Hockenos\, journalist\, author of Berlin Calling \nModerator\nTatiana Bazzichelli\, Artistic Director\, Disruption Network Lab \nTo register\, please contact Maryna Rakhlei at (030) 2888 1316 or mrakhlei@gmfus.org. \nBerlin has long been trending as the coolest destination not only for tourists but also for artists\, freelancers\, startups\, and angel investors. The city’s free-thinking\, entrepreneurial\, and often rebellious spirit is rooted in the transformation process that was set into motion with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The city that grew together out of two separate entities\, each with its own distinctive sub-culture\, shaped the New Berlin\, a uniquely creative and multifaceted city. \nThe Young Transatlantic Network and the Federal Government’s Centre of Excellence for the Cultural and Creative Industries cordially invite you to a discussion with Paul Hockenos\, an American journalist and writer\, and Tatiana Bazzichelli\, the artistic director of the Disruption Network Lab. We will talk about the counter-culture heroes of West Berlin and East Berlin\, explore the ways in which they shaped the Berlin we know today\, and why capital (both in terms of investments and the capital city) has followed creativity. \nAfter the discussion\, you are invited to join Gin and Genius. \nPaul Hockenos is a Berlin and New York–based writer who has been working in Germany and across Central and Eastern Europe since 1989. His work has appeared in The New York Times\, Newsweek\, Foreign Affairs\, The Nation\, Foreign Policy\, Spiegel International\, and elsewhere. His recent book\, Berlin Calling: A Story of Anarchy\, Music\, The Wall\, and the Birth of the New Berlin (2017) is an account of the past and present of the German capital. \nTatiana Bazzichelli is artistic director of the Disruption Network Lab\, a conference program at Kunstquartier Bethanien and other locations in Berlin. She curated transmediale festival (2011–14) and a number of international exhibitions. Her publications include Networked Disruption: Rethinking Oppositions in Art\, Hacktivism and the Business of Social Networking (2013). \nEine Veranstaltung des German Marshall Fund of the United States in Kooperation mit dem Kompetenzzentrum Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft des Bundes. \n
